M2 high-speed steel: choosing cutting tools beyond a hardness number

Drills, milling cutters and taps do not share the same cutting conditions. Review M2-family high-speed steel alongside edge preparation, wear and the intended operation.

More than hardness
M2-family high-speed steel is a familiar option in cutting-tool selection. Wear resistance, hot hardness, edge stability and manufacturing conditions belong in the discussion alongside a hardness number. Hot-hardness capability is not permission to increase cutting speed without considering the operation.
Define the tool and the job
Drilling, milling and tapping involve different cutting geometries and chip conditions. Describe the work material, feature size, continuity of cutting and required finish.
Include the machine, workholding, cooling and maintenance arrangements. The steel, tool geometry and intended use should be reviewed together rather than assigning parameters from appearance or a short grade name.
Use consistent observations
Record progressive wear and local damage separately, and identify whether the event occurred with a new tool or after regrinding. Apply the same observation fields when comparing batches.
Discuss coatings, surface treatments and repeated regrinding before manufacture. These operations do not remove the need to confirm the condition of the underlying tool material.
Write a usable specification
Confirm the standard, supplier designation, blank size, delivery condition, documentation and responsibility for subsequent heat treatment. A table linking M2-family terminology with other designations is a reference, not automatic approval of substitution.
Describe the maintenance issue or quality target you want to improve, then agree a trial and recording method. A useful proposal needs the workpiece and equipment context; it cannot be reduced to a universal speed, feed or life figure.
