Look at the repeated cycle

Die-casting tools experience repeated changes in temperature and mechanical loading. Thermal-fatigue resistance, strength at elevated temperature and toughness therefore belong in the material discussion alongside hardness. H13-family hot-work steel is a familiar starting point, not a complete tool-life specification.

Describe the individual component

Identify whether the part is a cavity insert, a component near the gate or a supporting part. Include dimensions, local thin sections and cooling arrangements. Different locations in the same tool may require different discussions.

Mark abrupt section changes and vulnerable features on the drawing. A change of steel should not replace a review of the component geometry and operating conditions.

Record what happens in service

Describe whether damage develops gradually as a surface network or appears as a sudden local break. Record its location and whether erosion, adhesion or dimensional change is also observed. Note when in the production sequence it appears.

Photographs and operating records are useful evidence, but do not prove a cause on their own. Review them together with material identification and heat-treatment records instead of treating every failure as a hardness problem.

Compare like with like

Agree the grade, delivery condition, inspection requirements and traceability. Ask the responsible providers to confirm the intended heat treatment and any surface-treatment sequence.

A branded H13 product may have additional production or quality requirements; those cannot be assumed for every supply carrying an H13 designation. Compare alternatives under defined, recorded conditions rather than expecting a universal temperature recipe or guaranteed number of shots.

Technical references

This is an educational selection guide, not a batch inspection report. Brand references illustrate material families and do not imply automatic equivalence or a commercial agency relationship. The cover is an AI-generated illustration, not a photograph of our equipment, customer project or delivered part.
